My maternal side has ties to Toge, Ba, and my paternal family comes from the beautiful Naikeli village of Nadroga. I grew up in Sugar City, where I was born. In 2020, I earned my Bachelor of Education (Secondary) degree from the Fiji National University. In 2022, as I finished my final unit for the University of the South Pacific's Postgraduate Diploma in Climate Change, I started my teaching job in Levuka, Ovalau, the former capital of Fiji. I carried out a significant study on climate change in one of Ovalau's villages, and much to my dismay, the image was unclear on the opposite side. The causes and impacts of climate change, mitigation and adaptation strategies, additional support from governments and NGOs, and traditional knowledge — all of which improve people's quality of life — are most likely to be hampered by gender stereotypes.
As a Pacific island nation, Fiji is vulnerable to the severe effects of weather shifts, natural disasters, and climate change. The majority of the villages in Fiji, a Melanesian nation, are patriarchal, with less female authority. This fundamentally alters society because it frequently fails to recognise the prolonged post-trauma impact that women experience. In my opinion, women can significantly contribute to the mitigation, adaptation, and climate resilience of local communities, particularly through their farming practices. Therefore, I am grateful to the Fiji National University and the ACIAR PASS-CR Program for giving me the chance to improve my knowledge and skills so that I may give back to my community.
