Growing Expertise: PASS-CR Scholar's Enriching Experience at Biosecurity Authority of Fiji

In this news post, we spotlight PASS-CR scholar Aradhana Deesh, who is currently participating in the Job Ready Program through a rewarding work placement at Post Entry Quarantine (PEQ) of the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF).

Aradhana is studying for a PhD in Biology at University of the South Pacific, focusing on the relationship between thrips and weed species associated with eggplant. Her research, aligned to the ACIAR Project (HORT/2016/185) Integrated Pests and Disease Management, centers on horticultural crop and pest management in Fiji's major export-growing regions.

Aradhana's work placement saw her collaborating with the Plants Team at PEQ BAF. This opportunity significantly expanded her expertise in Entomology. The Plants Team, composed of skilled Entomologists and technicians, provided a supportive and enriching learning environment. Aradhana gained hands-on experience in various critical tasks, such as insect identification and using diagnostic instruments for both molecular and morphological analyses. She also became proficient in using equipment for insect collection and preservation.

A crucial aspect of her role at PEQ BAF was maintaining and updating databases and understanding the processes of reporting and disseminating information to clients. These responsibilities were executed through well-coordinated standard operating procedures, ensuring accuracy and efficiency. Beyond the technical skills, Aradhana valued the supportive and familial atmosphere the Plant and Animal teams fostered.

As Aradhana’s original placement was coming to an end, she realized that there was more to learn and requested an extension   Thanks to the team, her request for an extension was granted, allowing her to remain with the team until the end of July. Reflecting on her experience, Aradhana shared, "I look forward to the remaining weeks with great anticipation, knowing they will further enhance my technical expertise and provide me with more opportunities to support the team in their vital work."

Aradhana expresses her heartfelt gratitude to the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Plant Protection Officer, and the entire BAF team for their unwavering support and for making her feel like part of the family. She also deeply appreciates PASS CR coordinator Dr Linda Wess, Work Placement Coordinator Ms Shivani Singh, and the supervisory team, Dr Leslie Ubaub, Dr Mereia Fong, and Prof Furlong, for their support throughout this work placement.
