ANNJULIE JOHNSON

  • I am a recent graduate of the University of the South Pacific at Samoa campus and just awarded an ACIAR-PASS scholarship for Master in Agriculture. Being passionate with the study of soil science had me stuck in school and away from home for more than 2 years now. I was born and raised in Vanuatu where 80% of the food we eat comes from the garden, and a must for girls to have the acquired skills for planting their food. I found out that certain crops don’t grow well in some places but they do in other places even when soils seem to be the same in particular places. Seeing the beauty of soil science being linked with crops and the environment answers a lot of questions about how to improve crop productivity and to maintain or enhance soil fertility and health. Pursing this dream through this research study will be of service to my people by providing practical information about the different variations in soil health and management and how it can affect crop yield and quality.
