AMELIA NADAU

Bachelor of Agriculture (USP, Samoa)

Post graduate diploma (USP, Samoa)

  • I am Amelia Nadau and hail from the beautiful Cakaudrove Province in Fiji. I grew up in my Vasu (mother’s village), Karoko Village in Tunuloa district. It takes a village to raise a child; this was true for me when I lost my mom when I was in high school. My mom's siblings sacrificed so much to put me and my siblings through school. With this support system, I was able to go to university and graduate with a Bachelor of Agriculture in 2020 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Agriculture in 2021 at the University of the South Pacific, Samoa Campus.

It has always been a goal of mine to further my studies in agriculture, and my main interests are in climate change. I am grateful and blessed to be one of the recipients of the ACIAR PASS-CR Scholarship 2023.

In Fiji, agricultural production is severely affected by climate change impacts. Weather and climate extremes can cause economic and social hardship, affecting agricultural productivity and making farmers vulnerable. In order to be willing to implement adaptation measures, farmers need to be aware of climate change. In that sense, the perception that farmers have about climate change not only informs their decisions but also determines the adoption of adaptation measures. Hence, my research will look into farmers perceptions on climate change impact on farm produce in the Sigatoka, Labasa, and Taveuni areas of Fiji.

I believe that through this research, I can give back to my community and my country as a whole. The value of my education reflects how much I give back to people and my community.
